Graphic Designer, Hospital Employee’s Union
As the graphic designer for an organization with over 100 staff members across multiple departments, I work with the communications team to generate print and digital materials for campaigns, member and public education, social media, advertising, promotional merchandise, and in-house communications.
I maintain brand standards, maintain and develop visual identities for campaigns and content types, and adapt messages and materials across print and digital platforms. I have worked with communications officers to edit short videos for use on social media, designed a member e-newsletter, and am responsible for all original visual content, with a strong focus on engaging members and encouraging member-generated content.
Most of my web design was done through Working Design, a small studio I worked with for almost 20 years. I was lead visual designer on most of the website projects, working closely with a web developer, primarily using WordPress CMS frameworks.
About Working Design
Working Design began in the 1990s as a print design studio primarily serving the labour movement and arts groups We produced member newsletters, posters, event programmes, brochures, books, member service handbooks, and campaign materials. Publications we designed won numerous awards from the Canadian Association of Labour Media.
We were known for our big picture thinking and our attention to detail. I worked closely with communications directors, committees and editors to build vibrant print materials, and visual and campaign identities.
As communications technology evolved, our company changed and grew with it.
We transformed into a web development studio, bringing our strong, focused communication skills to a new medium. Our client base expanded to include a wide range of non-profit agencies, research groups and small businesses.
My work involved helping our clients identify and shape their messages, write in content-rich styles for the web, strengthen their online presence, and express themselves in the best possible ways.
Some of our clients included:
BC Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health • Columbia Institute / Centre for Civic Governance • Century Group • Environmental Law Centre UVic • UNIFOR • Hospital Employees’ Union • West Vancouver Schools • Public Service Alliance of Canada • Kiwassa Neighbourhood House • Canadian Union of Public Employees BC
Working Design has closed. I’m looking forward to bringing my skills, dedication and vision to a new organization.
