First Call BC
First Call needed an up to date second generation website and an overhauled visual identity. As a coalition with over 80 organizations as members, they needed to serve a wide audience, providing fresh news, sharing reports and publications, and highlighting their campaigns.
While senior staff wanted to maintain the organization’s existing logo, a line of inquiry initiated by Working Design and supported by communications staff resulted in a modified logo. The new logo retained the spirit and theme of the original while giving the organization a new look.
The logo was a springboard into a revised visual design and approach for the new website. We led and participated in each stage of the website redesign and development leading staff through a detailed process of site planning, structuring and content development.
Environmental Law Centre at UVic
The Environmental Law Centre at the University of Victoria needed a professional, responsive website to promote their key services and messages: a law student placement program, their active litigation cases, and the value of their dedicated team of staff, associates and students.
- an accessible, searchable archive for their reports, papers, case studies and publications
- a news section to showcase their many active campaigns and cases
- to solicit donations and support
- to make clear who they work with, and the different ways they help protect the environment.
We created a site with strong visual impact, to highlight the beauty of the BC wilderness.
International Union of Operating Engineers
This union’s 11,000 members frequently work on the road and out of town on a wide range of industrial projects. They wanted a mobile-friendly site with easy access to key services, and a strong appeal to attract new members.
They also needed a showcase for their campaigns promoting and protecting industrial jobs in BC.
This custom WordPress site is a third generation website for the union. Their previous site was a real step forward, but still lacked an intuitive web-based content structure, and was difficult for in-house staff to manage.
We worked closely with IUOE’s talented communications coordinator on this iteration to build a robust, flexible site that could contain a deep archive beneath a simple and inviting interface.
IUOE members are proud of the work they do, and an archive of dramatic and striking images was put to great use. The site is bold and direct, with well-considered navigation points and big visual appeal.
This small union has a big message for Canadian builders, contractors and developers: mechanical insulation saves money, energy and the planet.
They’re no regular union — rebranding themselves as BC Insulators, they’re engaging with the building industry and local governments to promote the benefits of properly installed insulation in heating and cooling systems.
This website provides resources for members and information about becoming a professional insulator, while incorporating its key message: Insulation is important, and we’re the people to do the job right.
